Buffalo Bone China

View all 18 photos...
Buffalo Bone China is a video and mixed media installation that investigates the history of the extermination of the buffalo and the subsequent destruction of many First Nations communities. This work is about a significant part of plains history, when the British fine bone china dinner service was an elegant by-product of the extermination of the buffalo. Claxton critiques the colonial practices of a century ago to comment on the brutal tactics that deprived many First Nations communities of their livelihood, and their spirit. In the video, "the buffalo pounding across the prairie to the clash of cymbals serves as metaphor for destruction." (Charlotte Townsend-Gault, in Reservation X) The fractured bone china is placed within a sacred circle constructed with red rope and stanchions, thus honouring and reclaiming the buffalo from the bones.
