ARATA ISOZAKI
Arata Isozaki was born in 1931 in Oita, Japan. He is one of several Japanese architects that have become internationally known for their outstanding architecture. He attended Tokyo University and later worked and studied under Kenzo Tange. In 1963 he opened his own practice in Oita, Japan. Most of his work has been completed in Japan though he has ventured into other cultures.
His boldness of form and color, his inventiveness and careful detailing have become a Isozaki trademark. Like other architects of Japan his spiritually powerful works are culturally influenced. His designs offer subtle irony and often have a definite sense of humor. In an attempt to integrate an imported culture, the west, with traditional beliefs, the ease, his buildings have a connection to the past but are not overcome by this trait. The use of these cultural elements often appear as metaphors that take form of poetics.
His use of simple geometric forms provide a clear structural system and a high level of industrial craftsmanship in detail. He often uses the cube and the grid in minimalist fashions; his work is not arrogant it is simple yet bold. The barrel vaulted roof/ceiling is an Isozaki mainstay. He constructs masses juxtaposed with voids and softens hard edges with curves. He designs with an image in mind, a metaphor that is then transposed into a clean, colorful, pure and cerebral geometry.
Through the use selected materials, textures, colors, and attractive forms his buildings have a strong visual composition that contrast and accents elegantly. He has said, architecture is an architects manipulation of forms."The use of light, forms, and volumes of space may be abstract at times and an abstraction of you mind at others. His works seem to have an underlying meaning, the works are lively and inviting. The interior spaces are very minimalist, the bare essentials and nothing more. A purist composition that offers neutral space to comprehend.
Arata Isozaki designs are very sophisticated and detailed with great care. He sees architecture as a play of pure forms simultaneously containing economic, functional, technical, and a variety of other solutions. His contemporary style of architecture has brought him to the forefront of not only Japanese architecture but into the light of international architecture.

"ASIAN FIELD" EXHIBITION
Asian Field exhibition tour is an immense sculptural installation by the eminent British artist Antony Gormley, organised by the British Council. The making of this project actually started in January 03. From Jan 18-22, 200,000 hand sized clay figures were made, under the guidance of the artist, by almost 400 people of all ages from the Huadu District in the north-east of Guangzhou.
Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950, where he still lives and works. He came to prominence with a series of life-size figure sculptures which were moulded from his own body and clad in lead. He later introduced cast-iron and the groupings and configurations were realised on an increasingly enlarged and dramatic scale. He does not consider himself a figurative artist, but views his sculptures as vehicles for universal themes related to the human condition. He has exhibited widely in Britain and abroad and his work is represented in public collections throughout the world. He has undertaken numerous major commissions including, perhaps the best known public sculpture in Great Britain, The Angel of the North, a vast winged figure in Corten steel standing 20 metres high with a wing span of 50 metres. He won the prestigious Turner Prize presented at the Tate Gallery, London in 1994.
